Abstract: In order to explore the potential mediating role of selfesteem between childhood abuse and later coping styles, 324 college students were investigated by using Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, SelfEsteem Scale and Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire. The results showed that emotion neglect was the most frequent among all types of abuse during childhood. While the relationship between child abuse and negative coping was not statistically significant, each type of child abuse was negatively correlated with positive coping styles in adulthood, and emotional neglect could even negatively predict positive coping styles. Furthermore, selfesteem was found to play a partial mediating role. This indicated that emotional neglect not only had a direct impact on the positive coping styles of college students, but also indirectly affected the positive coping styles through the level of selfesteem.
