The Measurement and Individual Differences of College Students' Work Volition

Abstract: Based on both literature review and the survey results from 102 open-ended questionnaires, we developed an initial questionnaire with thirty-six items for measuring the work volition of college students. A total of 650 valid questionnaires were collected from a comprehensive university in Guangzhou. By conducting item analysis and exploratory factor analysis, 9 items were retained in the final questionnaire. We found that college students' work volition has three dimensions, namely career preparation volition, social opinion volition, and occupational environment volition. Then another 448 valid questionnaires were collected from multiple comprehensive universities in Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Xiangtan, Beijing, Tianjin, and Quanzhou. The results of confirmatory factor analysis supported the three-factor structure of college students' work volition. Analyses also showed that both work volition and its three dimensions were not scored high by college students in China. Moreover, the level of occupational environment volition for female students was lower than male students, while the level of career preparation volition for those students who grew up in low-income families was lower than their counterparts who came from those families with higher social economic status. The scale we developed in this study has good reliability and validity. And it can be used as a measurement instrument for college students' work volition.
