The Effect of Ego-depletion on Police Aggression and its Mitigation

Abstract: The present study explores the influence of the depletion of selfcontrol resources on police aggression and whether the influence can be affected by different types of behavior consciousness priming. The research adopted the singlefactor betweensubjects design. The independent variable of experiment 1 was selfcontrol resources. The independent variable of experiment 2 was the behavior consciousness priming of police in the state of ego depletion, including lawabiding behavior consciousness priming and lawbreaking behavior consciousness priming. The dependent variable of both experiments ware the level of aggression, represented by the number of provided chili pepper. Results: (1) There were more aggression in the depletion group than in the nondepletion group; (2) Compared with the no-priming group, the law-abiding behavior consciousness priming group showed less aggression, and the law-breaking behavior consciousness priming group showed no significant increase in aggression. Conclusions: (1) The police in the state of self-depletion are more likely to behave aggressively toward suspects; (2) In the state of ego-depletion, the priming of law-breaking behavior consciousness will not lead to more aggression; the priming of law-abiding behavior consciousness may reduce aggression.
