Abstract: Based on the selfregulation model, the purpose of this paper is to further explore the influencing factors of choice deferral. This study takes 132 college students as subjects and uses experiment and questionnaire to explore whether anticipated regret mediates the relationship between regulatory mode and choice deferral, and whether social reference point moderates this relation. The results showed that: (1) Individuals with different regulatory modes had different preferences on choice deferral. Specifically, compared to locomotion mode, participants with assessment mode were more inclined to defer their choices. (2) Anticipated regret mediated the relationship between regulatory mode and choice deferral. (3) Social reference points moderated the relationship between regulatory mode and anticipated regret. Specifically, in the downward reference point condition, individuals with locomotion mode experienced less anticipated regret, while in the upward reference point condition, both individuals with locomotion mode and assessment mode all experienced more anticipated regret. Moreover, social reference points also moderated the mediating effect of anticipated regret.
Key words: regulatory mode, social reference point, anticipated regret, choice deferral, moderated mediating
