A Study on Impact of Appropriateness of Experienced Temperature on Time Perception

Abstract: According to embodied cognitive theory of knowledge representation, thought and conceptual processing are based on the sensation and body activities. Previous experiments also proved that perception of temperature had important effect on time perception. The current study used temporal bisection task to investigate whether temperature appropriateness affects time perception. The aim of Experiment 1 and Experiment 2 was to investigate the effect of hot and cold temperature and temperature appropriateness separately. The result of Experiment 1 showed that there was no difference between the effect of words of hot and cold temperature on judgment portion of long time; however the result of Experiment 2 found that there was more possibility to judge the inappropriate temperature words to be long time than that of appropriate temperature words. The study concluded that embodied temperature could affect time interval judgment. More importantly, appropriateness of embodied temperature is very important in time perception. Experience of inappropriate temperature will elicit negative emotion, and improve the level of physiological arousal, which leads to overestimation of time duration.
