Abstract:

It is of great significance to explore the impact of self-construal and empathy on the sense of social responsibility for understanding culturally different individuals and cultivating talents in specific cultural contexts. Study 1 used a questionnaire survey to investigate the relationship among the three variables among college students. The results were as follows: (1) There were significant positive correlations among independent self, interdependent self, empathy and the sense of social responsibility; (2) independent self, interdependent self and empathy could significantly predict the sense of social responsibility. Study 2 used a 2 (self-construal: independent self / interdependent self) by 2 (empathy levels: high / low) between-subjects design, manipulated the self-construal through a situation-primed survey experiment, and grouped the subjects with high or low empathy levels according to their scores of the Interpersonal Reactivity Index – C (IRI-C). The results of ANOVA showed that: (1) the main effect of self-construal was significant; (2) the main effect of empathy was not significant; (3) the interaction effect between self-construal and empathy was significant; (4) with the interdependent-self priming, the sense of social responsibility of the high empathy group was significantly higher than that of the low empathy group, while with the independent-self priming, there was no significant difference between the high empathy group and the low empathy group. Therefore, interdependent self and empathy have a positive impact on the sense of social responsibility.

Key words: the sense of social responsibility, priming of self-construal, trait empathy, college students
