Abstract: Theoretically, the mediating effect indicates the development of psychology. However, it is necessary to rethink whether the seemingly flourishing investigation of mediating effect is a real indicator of the development of psychological research. The mediating effect in psychology aims to investigate the psychological mechanism between independent variables and dependent variables. Therefore, a mediating effect contains three pairs of causal effect among independent variable, dependent variable, and mediating variable. There are three approaches can be used to examine the mediating effect: cross-sectional-measurement-approaches, trace-measurement-approaches, and experiment-design-approaches. Under the view of casual effect chain, the advantageous and disadvantageous of each approach were discussed.
