The Psychological Mechanism that Negative News Influence Interpersonal Trust

Abstract: To study the influence of negative news report on interpersonal trust and its psychological mechanism, questionnaires were handed out to 1189 college students of three universities in Wuhan. In the part of experiment, singlefactor betweensubjects design was adopted to study the influence of negative news(induced positive/neutral/negative moral emotions) on interpersonal trust. In the questionnaire section , negative news were used as scenarios to explore the relation of empathy, attribution style and interpersonal trust. Then, an empathy mediating effect model with interpersonal trust was built. The results showed that: (1)Reading negative news could incur different types(positive/neutral/negative) of moral emotions, which has a conspicuous influence on readers interpersonal trust. Further more, reading negative news which could induce negative moral emotions will decrease the level of audiences interpersonal trust;(2) Empathy plays a mediating role in the negative news scene and the readers inherent attribution styles have a significant influence on interpersonal trust through the mediating effect of empathy.
