Abstract:

How does the body affect cognition causally?  In their new book Embodied Cognitive Psychology: A Dialogue between Brain, Body and Mind, Chen Wei et al. take a different approach, choosing to answer this hot question in cognitive science from a psychological perspective.  Taking a skeptical stance, the authors argues that traditional embodied cognitive theories only emphasize the interaction between the brain, mind and body, and are far from clarifying the role of the body in cognition. Therefore, the authors puts forward a concept of “interoceptive embodied cognition”(EMC), which regards the psychological activities of interoception as a bridge between the inner and outer aspects of embodied cognition, thus providing a theoretical framework for embodied cognition in psychological sense, and greatly deepening and expanding the concept and connotation of embodied cognition.

Key words: mind, embodied cognitive psychology, interoception, cognitive science
