Abstract: Based on the theory of human basic values, we focus on three research themes and discuss the applications and trends of the theory, including (a) the differences and associations between values and morality in psychology studies, (b) the formation of values via intergenerational transmission, and (c) the effects of value tradeoffs and activation on behavior. Over the past 30 years, although a large number of valuable methods and tools have been developed for the study of basic values, the theory focuses on the cross-cultural consistency of value contents and structure. Against this backdrop, it is important to examine the cultural differences in values. Future research not only needs to expand the research themes and paradigms, but also needs to explore a framework of indigenous value research.

Key words: value theory; morality; intergenerational transmission of values; value tradeoffs
