Abstract: To investigate the impact of emotional labour on work engagement and whether psychological capital can influence their relationship, 193 employees have been recruited to complete a questionnaire for this study. Using Work Engagement Scale, Emotional Labour Scale and Psychological Capital Scale, it is found that work engagement can be predicted by emotional labour, while psychological capital mediates the relationship between emotional labours expression of naturally felt emotions dimension and work engagement, as individuals with stronger psychological capital can maintain work engagement at relatively stable and high level even with lower scoring in expression of naturally felt emotions. Based on these findings, a solution focused coaching intervention to enhance emotional labour and psychological capital has been conducted with 34 employees in a foreigncapital enterprise. After three sessions, participants scorings in both optimism dimension of psychological capital and work engagement have been significantly improved while emotional labour shows no significant change, indicating that a solution focused coaching approach can improve employees mental status and work performance effectively through short-term intervention.
