Abstract: In order to explore the effectiveness and advantages of music therapy on shy adolescents and its mechanism, 30 students with shy behaviors and high social anxiety were recruited from one Beijing middle school and were randomly assigned to three groups, which are music therapy group, cognitivebehavioral group and control group. The two experimental groups accepted group intervention adopting music therapy and cognitivebehavioral approaches for eight weeks respectively. The results indicated that (1) the instant and delayed effects of music therapy and cognitivebehavioral interventions on shy adolescents were both significant; (2) the delayed effect of music therapy intervention was significantly better than that of cognitivebehavioral intervention; (3) for music therapy group, the change amount of shy adolescents selfacceptance level can significantly predict that of shyness level in a negative direction. In conclusions, music therapy can significantly reduce adolescents shyness and had a better longterm effect comparing with cognitivebehavioral approach. Selfacceptance was the mediating variable between the relationship of music therapy intervention and alleviation of adolescents shyness.
