Abstract:

To explore the relationship among neuroticism, negative emotions, trait mindfulness and emotional effectiveness, we investigated the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire, Profile of Mood States, Mindful Attention Awareness Scale and Emotional Creativity Inventory of 1,423 Chinese college students who were chosen by overall random sampling. (1) There were various significant correlations among neuroticism, negative emotions, trait mindfulness and emotional effectiveness. (2) Negative emotions were predicted positively by neuroticism, and negatively by trait mindfulness and emotional effectiveness. (3) Trait mindfulness and emotional effectiveness played multiple mediation effects between neuroticism and negative emotions. Hence, neuroticism can affect negative emotions directly, and indirectly through trait mindfulness and emotional effectiveness. In sum, these findings suggest a potential mechanism how neuroticism influences negative emotions, and provide a therapeutic target for which the interventions based on trait mindfulness and emotional effectiveness may take effect to improve negative emotions.

Key words: neuroticism; negative emotions, trait mindfulness, emotional effectiveness
