College Students’ Narcissism and Aggressive behavior: Analysis of A Moderated Mediating Model

Abstract:

In order to explore the relationship among narcissism, self control and aggression of college students, the present study conducted a moderated mediation model to examine the effect of narcissism and self control on aggressive behavior and its gender difference. A sample of 1598 college students was investigated with perceived narcissistic scale, brief self control scale, and short-form Buss-Perry aggression questionnaire, respectively. The results showed that: (1) Narcissism was negatively correlated with self control, but positively correlated with aggression. Self control was negatively correlated with aggression. (2) Narcissism not only had a direct effect on aggression, but also influenced aggression through the mediating role of self control. (3) The mediating effect of self control on both male and female samples have reached the significant level, compared with male students, the female’s mediating effect of self control on narcissism and aggression has been significantly enhanced. These findings have important reference value for intervention of narcissism and training of self control.
