The Relationship between Childhood Trauma and Internet Addiction among College Students: The Mediating Effect of Coping Styles

Abstract: This study aimed to explore the relationship and mechanism among the childhood trauma, coping styles and the Internet addiction of college students. 420 college students were administered using Child psychological abuse and neglect scale, Young internet addiction scale and Simplified coping style questionnaire. The results demonstrated that the proportion of Internet addiction for college students was relatively high. The significant positive predictive role was found between childhood trauma to Internet addiction, and there was the significant negative correlations between coping styles to Internet addiction,with the coping styles playing partially mediating role between childhood trauma and Internet addiction. This study suggested that childhood trauma could not only directly influence Internet addiction for college students, but indirectly impact on Internet addiction through coping styles.
