Locus of Control and State Anxiety in College Students:The Mediating Effect of Negative Mood Regulation Expectancies

Abstract: This study aimed to explore the relationship and mechanism among locus of control, negative mood regulation expectancies and state anxiety of college students. And a survey was conducted by means of IPC (Internality, Powerful Others, and Chance Scale), the generalized expectancies for negative mood regulation scale, statetrait anxiety inventory of 400 college students at a university in Guangzhou randomly. The result indicated that college students locus of control, negative mood regulation expectancies and state anxiety were significantly correlated with each other. While negative mood regulation expectancies and state anxiety can be predicted effectively by locus of control, the negative mood regulation expectancies also played a significantly predictive role on state anxiety. Hierarchical linear modeling showed that negative mood regulation expectancies fully worked as a mediator between state anxiety and internality, powerful others, chance respectively. And the negative mood regulation expectancies exerted a mediating effect on the correlativity between locus of control and state anxiety of college students.
