Nostalgia: A Review of Conceptualization, Theory and Future Prospect

Abstract: Nostalgia is a universal and complex emotion of human beings, which can bring individuals both positive and negative effects. Integrating the previous research on classification of nostalgia, we find that its dimensions can be divided from two perspectives: horizontal and vertical. Methodologically, content analysis, questionnaire, and experimental method are typically approached in studies of nostalgia. Based on research findings, the notion of nostalgia has been widely applied in fields such as consumer psychology, marketing and psychotherapy. At present, the formation mechanisms of nostalgia can be interpreted from the perspectives of physiology, emotion and interpersonal relationship. Future research on nostalgia should pay attention to the followings:(1)focusing on the combination of quantitative and qualitative methods;(2)equally emphasizing experimental method and psychological measurement;(3)developing nostalgic scales that applicable for various age groups in China;(4)enhancing the internal mechanism and vertical research of nostalgia;(5)deepening study on positive effects of nostalgia and expanding its applications in organizational management.
